Our Off-Road Editor Charlie Williams is not having a flashback or another hallucination… his latest report is the real deal:
Big news at the International Motocross Museum — they have a website! You can learn more about the museum and the epic party/fundraiser they are planning on this site. First a little about the museum itself. Well, it's not a place quite yet, but a collection of bikes like no other is just about ready for its public unveiling.
Founder Terry Good has been collecting exotic bikes and moto-memorabilia for the past 44 years. This isn't just any collection of old bikes, these are Works Bikes of pedigree. Take for example the actual bikes Heikki Mikkola rode, or the enormous DeCoster collection — we’re talking serious pedigree and provenance. Trick, rare, unobtainable! The collection is enough to warrant a 100,000 square foot facility.
A home in Chicago is now being created. It will be a mecca for motocross fans. In addition to the bikes, there will be a 100-seat theater, lecture and meeting rooms, a vast collection of print media that will be open and available to the public. It is not even open yet and it is already on the top of my list to go visit.
But first, a party! Any project this glorious and ambitious deserves a party/fundraiser and this will be one for the history books. I'll just share the first page of the guest list and you be the judge:
Bob Hannah
Roger DeCoster
Torsten Hallman
Sylvan Geboers
Hakan Anderson
Harry Everts
Christer Hammagren
Jaroslav Falta
Gerrit Wolsink
Taichi Yoshimura
Jeff Stanton
Warren Reid
Lars Larsson
Steve Wise
Heikki Mikkola
Gunnar Lindstrom
Rick Johnson
I could go on, but you get the point. October 2 is the date, tickets are still available for the party, Chicago Illinois is the location. It is set to be an all day affair and I can't wait! As a lifelong dirtbike guy, I'm very excited to see a brick and mortar facility to celebrate our past. No one else will preserve it for us, it's up to us.
