Destination Harley-Davidson moving on:

No brakes! While his wingman Ricky Brabec watched his World Rally-Raid Championship Portugal hopes sink, Skyler Howes 10 made a splash as the Top American. He slid past Brabec yesterday when the bike sank and blasted through the slick sections of Stage 4. However Howes had his hand full, losing his front brake just a few kilomeers into the Stage. Battling slippery terrain and multiple crashes, he pushed through to finish 6th, just under 13 minutes behind teammate Tosha Schareina Stage winning time and remains 6th overall heading into the final Stage. "I really didn’t have a good day," Howes admits. "I ended up losing my front brake 6 km into the Stage, so I was really just trying to ride as smoothly as I could and hit my marks... but then had a couple of crashes, so it just took the wind out of my sails. It was a really long day, super difficult with the greasy, slimy, slippery tracks, big giant mud holes." Definitely not the high desert he is used to! "Man, it was a really tough, long day for me. I got my butt kicked, had a couple of big crashes. I’m happy to make it through this one, but I’m really happy it’s over!"

"We’ve been battling rain and muddy conditions all the time, but today was probably the slimiest, greasiest mud out of the whole Rally so far and it made it really tricky to find the rhythm," said a soaked Ricky Brabec back in the bivouac after Stage 4 of the World Rally-Raid Championship in Portugal. "I struggled all day to find the rhythm and the pace that I’ve had the past couple of days. Everything was off for me today, my braking points, my throttle control, my mind and it was a big struggle." Of course sinking his bike completely yesterday sucked too. "After yesterday’s incident I knew I was kind of, not out of the race, but out of trying to to fight for the fourth or fifth place that I had, so today was just a kind of making it to the finish line." And just when things could get worse, the 2X Dakar Rally winner had another get off. "I had a crash again today, doing nothing. It was a slow crash, but I slid into a concrete pillar and knew I had to pick myself back up and told myself that I’m over it and hitting the ground this week.

While his Rally2 teammate Martim Ventura charged to a Stage win, Preston Campbell was just happy to keep his head above water on Stage 4 of the World Rally-Raid Championship in Portugal! Riders had hoped to escape the persistent wet weather that has defined this year’s Rally, but the conditions continued to play their part. Of the total distance, 317 km were timed, beginning with slower, technical sections marked by frequent gates before opening into faster tracks after the border crossing. Even then, water-filled ruts forced riders to stay cautious on what proved to be the longest and most punishing day of the event. Although he didn’t get a podium, young Campbell described it as his strongest day of the Rally so far, as he continues to adapt to the ever-changing terrain and conditions. Although it didn’t fully translate on the results sheet, with the American finishing 8th, 8’30” behind Ventura, he remains 7th overall, now 29’19” off the lead. “I felt like I rode my best day of the Rally," claims Campbell. “I felt pretty good on the bike, and happy with trying to adapt here. Yes, it’s been a struggle, but I've been enjoying trying to improve everyday. At home we don’t have this type of terrain too much, we have open desert, so these tight, little roads, wet and muddy aren’t our speciality. But I’m having a good time trying to adapt.” With the finish line in Loulé fast approaching, the Monster Energy HRC - Honda Racing Corporation duo will be pushing hard on the final day, with just 291 km left to run.
