The Rally 2 Class dogfight as Preston Campbell has pushed his way onto the podium heading into Stage 3. He started Stage 2 just behind rookie teammate Bruno Crivilin and immediately showed impressive pace. After the opening 45 km, he was the fastest Rally 2 rider and sat just three seconds behind Rally GP contender Edgar Canet!
“It was super rocky and technical right from the start,” concedes Campbell. “But I caught Bruno and we rode through the dunes together, which was super nice and a lot of fun… almost like motocross. As the day went on, the pace picked up and it got faster and faster, so I just kept pushing. I felt good physically all day. At 273 km I made one big mistake and spent a couple of minutes looking for a waypoint, which wasn’t ideal, but overall I had some good times out there and I’m happy with the day.”
Tackling the dunes alongside Crivilin, Campbell took advantage of the change in terrain and continued his charge towards the provisional overall podium. He eventually brought his HRC Honda home in third place, 10’17” behind Ventura. Campbell now holds that final podium position overall, although Crivilin is just 32 seconds behind as the pair prepare to continue their battle over the remaining stages.
More of Morocco’s legendary dunes lie ahead today. Another long day in the saddle will see the competitors cover a total of 591 km as the Rallye du Maroc continues to test both riders and machines.
