“We are seeing the emergence of ‘Sport Utility Bicycles,’” notes Industry Consultant and MIC Aftermarket Chair Tim Calhoun. “A trend is quickly emerging: fat-tired go-anywhere bikes. Heavy-duty do-anything bicycles — which I dub ‘sport utility bikes’ — are beginning to emerge as the showroom floor winners for powersports dealers, and this segment has incredible momentum and opportunity for those involved.”
Calhoun is quick to concede many companies took an early run at placing pedal-assist eBicycles into powersports dealers with limited success. “I believe that consumers wanting a pedal-assist mountain or roadbike are still primarily visiting bicycle shops for these.” Opportunity is knocking for motorcycle dealers.
“These bikes work great in just about any environment: road, off-road, hunting, fishing, camping, etc. They allow users to explore areas they may not otherwise be able to reach easily and allow older users more access to trails they may not be able to enjoy otherwise. They give campers and overland explorers using vehicle-mounted tents an alternative transportation option. Pit bikes, neighborhood cruisers, runs to the store and more… these bikes do a little of it all.”
Bikes like the QuietKat have earned their stripes in the hunting, fishing and outdoor market, so the crossover is natural. Trailers, dry bags, racks and even solar charging panels are available. While these bikes fit many categories, what sells them is that motorcycle riders can identify with these bikes, the look is familiar, and more importantly, they look (and are!) fun.
