Canadian Motorcycle Imports Over 800cc To Be Banned
According to the latest edition of the Motorcycle Industry Council’s RideReport, Canadian motorcycles with engine displacements greater than 800cc will be banned beginning September 29, replacing the 50% tariff that has applied to those motorcycles since August 22. “The new import ban is narrowly targeted. Its annex contains only one HTSUS classification, 8711.50.00, covering motorcycles and similar cycles with reciprocating internal-combustion engines over 800cc,” states MIC.
President Trump issued the proclamation September 8 as part of an escalating trade dispute with Canada. The action moves motorcycles in that classification from the existing 50% tariff to an outright prohibition on importation at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 29.
A White House fact sheet said the administration is also modifying the list of Canadian products subject to the 50% tariffs, adding products — including ATVs — and removing others, with the changes taking effect September 15.
