For 65 years S&S Cycle has been on a mission to go faster, and now they are making that goal possible for the industry with the expansion of their skunkworks Emissions Lab. “The S&S Cycle Emissions Lab is the logical continuation of George Smith’s original plan where he said, ‘I want to make all motorcycles go faster.’ Our Emissions Lab allows S&S dealers in states with regulatory compliance laws to be able to sell components that deliver performance for their customers,” notes Howard Kelly, VP of Marketing.
“Irrespective of the ebb and flow of environmental regulation, it is a core competency and strategic imperative for S&S Cycle to remain committed and engaged with emissions testing and certification,” explains Brett Smith, Director and Owner. “Our lab has been a reliable source of testing and certification in the motorcycle industry since its inception. We continue collaboration with many of our peers and competitors alike to ensure smooth delivery of emission compliant products now and for years to come.”
Starting back in 1994 S&S was obtaining CARB EOs for proprietary products and by 1998 S&S Cycle had fully compliant engines available. “We also realized it would be in our best interest to build an emissions lab of our own,” adds Smith. The S&S Emissions Lab is recognized by both CARB and the EPA to be able to perform complete testing of Motorcycle, ATV and UTV tailpipe emissions along with CA Evaporative Emissions testing.
“Along with generating over 110 CARB EOs for S&S, we have been supporting OE manufacturers and aftermarket component manufacturers since 2008 through their emissions certification journeys,” he says.
“We work with a strict confidentiality agreement that allows our OE customers and even aftermarket competitors to bring their certification needs to S&S. It might seem crazy for us to help competitors, but S&S believes a healthy industry has competition,” says Smith. “With our experience we can help them find the most economical and efficient ways to get the certifications they need.”
