Powersports Economy Reaches $48.2 Billion
According to the latest research from the Motorcycle Industry Council, the U.S. powersports retail marketplace represents $48.2 billion in economic value, supporting 112,221 dealership jobs and $5.6 billion in payroll across 10,632 powersports retailers nationwide. MIC also estimates that more than 1.1 million new powersports vehicles were sold.
Those figures measure the direct powersports retail ecosystem, including new and used vehicle sales, financing and insurance, parts and accessories, and dealer service across motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and recreational off-highway vehicles. But they represent just one measure of the industry’s broader economic presence. Earlier this year, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis data showed motorcycling/ATVing, which includes recreational off-highway vehicles, ranked fourth among conventional outdoor recreation activities by current-dollar value added in 2024. Together, the figures help illustrate powersports’ economic reach nationally and in communities across the country.
“These reports help put the scale of powersports into terms that people can immediately understand,” notes Buckner Nesheim, MIC’s Director of Research & Statistics. “We can talk about the size of the industry nationally, but the state reports make that impact local. They give companies, policymakers, media and others concrete numbers showing the businesses, jobs, payroll and economic activity powersports supports in their own states.”
