Skyler Howes 10 found a strong rhythm across the salt flats early on Stage 2 of the DESAFIO RUTA 40 Rally but, like Day 1, his progress was hampered by another tablet malfunction. The issue caused him to lose valuable time after getting lost and he ultimately finished tenth, 9’31” off the pace. “Stage 2 was short but a super physically demanding one,” said Howes. “It was 128 km with a lot of sand whoops, really really tight trees and like pokey trees too and I got some thorns stuck in my arm. It’s kind of like acupuncture, so if I move just right then I can’t use my fingers, so that was exciting. "Today, I unfortunately had another tablet malfunction and I got lost this time, so that was a real big bummer and it is what it is. But I still feel like I rode good and just pushed hard until the end and did what I could. It was almost 700 km today but only 120 km of racing, still a long day, but tomorrow’s going to be a big one, so we’ll keep pushing.”
RICKY BRABEC BATTLES, SKYLER HOWES STRUGGLES ON STAGE 2 While Preston Campbell was ripping up the Rally 2 ranks at the Ruta 40 Rally, Monster Energy/ HRC - Honda Racing Corporation Rally GP heroes Ricky Brabec and Skyler Howes 10 lost their way on Stage 2… Literally. Brabec’s odometer went out and Howes' route book tablet took a dump for the second day in a row. “The day was good, stage two got cut a little bit short, like 200 km short,” said 2X Dakar winner Brabec. “So, short and sweet today with a big transfer at the end. I made one mistake early on but it is what it is. I’m just here riding and getting some training in, so all is good, the team is doing great and we’re doing the best job we can.” Brabec endured a difficult opening section after encountering issues with his odometer, dropping to tenth at the first waypoint and losing almost two-and-a-half minutes to Aussie rival Daniel Sanders early on. The American steadily recovered throughout the stage, climbing back to fourth by the finish, 5’25” behind the winner. He remains third overall, though now trails the rally lead by 12’35”.
PRESTON CAMPBELL P1 IN RALLY 2 Proving the apple doesn’t fall from the tree, Baja Legend Johnny Campbell's boy Preston Campbell claimed his first World Cup Rally 2 stage victory on Stage 2 of the DESAFIO RUTA 40 in Argentina. It was also the second stage sweep for Monster Energy/HRC - Honda Racing Corporation as Campbell’s wingmen flew in formation to the finish. Although Campbell admitted to not feeling fully comfortable in the opening kilometers, the young American quickly found his rhythm. By the first waypoint, he had already built a lead of nearly 30 seconds over Martim Ventura as he pushed for a breakthrough stage win. Excelling in the sandy sections aboard his Honda CRF450RX RALLY, Campbell powered to victory with a commanding margin of 2’49” over second place. The result also elevated him to the overall Rally 2 lead, where he now holds a 2’17” advantage over Ventura. The trio now firmly control the Rally 2 overall standings, covered by just 2’35”, while extending their advantage to more than seven minutes over fourth place. “Today was super good for me. When I started off, I felt a little uncomfortable, like I was kind of fighting myself and just had to relax a little bit and adjust my riding style as quickly as possible,” admits Campbell. “Halfway through the stage it changed to just sand, sand roads, sand whoops and I felt super comfortable and was able to push. I’m super stoked on the stage today, looking forward to the rest of the week." Stage 3 takes the riders into the dunes of Nihuil on a southern loop from San Rafael. Marking the midway point of the Rally, the stage will feature a demanding 575 km in total, including 408 km against the clock for the Monster Energy Honda HRC riders.

BRABEC HAS HIS HEAD SCREWED BACK ON, SET TO DEFEND DESAFIO TITLE Defending DESAFIO RUTA 40 winner Ricky Brabec delivered a strong opening performance, finishing just one second behind fastest rider Luciano Benavides in Sunday’s Prologue. The Top American then started Stage 1 just behind his teammate Tosha Schareina but struggled early in the cold morning conditions while trying to regain feeling in his hands and feet. Running sixth after 35 km, the Dakar Rally runner-up steadily increased his pace over the remainder of the Stage to claim the final podium position. Finishing 7’29” from the stage-winning time, the reigning champ remains firmly in the hunt alongside Schareina. “The prologue was good, it’s nice to shake the monkey off the back and start the Rally,” says Brabec. “Stage 1 was a slow start for me. It was pretty cold this morning, so I couldn’t move my fingers or feet too well this morning. "The first 100 km I lost a little bit of time just trying to get warmed up. It was so cold I couldn’t feel the handlebars or levers, so had a bit of a struggle this morning. As the stage went on it was better and better. I struggled a little bit for like 50 km, on and off the gas, then the brakes, trying the best I could to get around them. In the circumstances it was a fast road with a lot of dangers and cuts so I couldn’t do too much, couldn’t make a pass, but fortunately I was able to get around them and then I just did the best I could.”
